Biography

Dr. McConnell received her B.A. from the College of Wooster and her masters in human resource management and Ph.D. in business administration from the University of Utah.

In 1988, she was appointed Director of the Management Communication Center at the David Eccles School of Business, University of Utah. Over the next ten years, she worked with faculty and students to strengthen the communication focus at the graduate level and served as a catalyst for curricular change in an expanding MBA program.

In 1998 Dr. McConnell joined the Eller College of Management as Director of the Business Communication Program, where, in addition to teaching MBA communication courses, she designed and implemented a core undergraduate communication course which is now required of all Eller College graduates. Dr. McConnell was also instrumental in securing a grant to remodel the Business Communication Lab and expanding communication services across the curriculum.

Although the focus of her teaching is at the Eller College, she has facilitated an international exchange for faculty and students with the University Jean Moulin, Lyon 3, in Lyon. This year she will represent Eller College and teach a one-week intercultural communication seminar at their graduate business school in France.

Dr. McConnell is a member of various professional organizations including the Association for Business Communication (ABC), and the Management Communication Association (MCA). She served as president for MCA for 2002-03.

In addition to her academic work, Dr. McConnell has been a communication consultant on a variety of management issues (e.g., employee coaching and development, customer service, and interpersonal communication) for a number of organizations including American Express, Norwest Pipeline Corporation, Intermountain Health Care, UNISYS, Eaton-Kenway, Tenneco, Associated Business Products and QuicKnowledge, Inc. She has worked most recently with healthcare providers through the Arizona Healthcare Leadership Academy.
