Doctoral Program Alumni Reflection

Reflection from Jochen Reb, Ph.D. 2005

When I first came to The University of Arizona’s Department of Management and Organizations, I had no intention to get my Ph.D. there. At that time, I was a student at Technical University Berlin, Germany. I had only planned to be at the department for a few months to conduct research for my diploma thesis. After that, I wanted to return and get my Ph.D. in Germany. However, I soon realized how much I enjoyed being in the department. The intellectual climate was stimulating and the faculty and staff were very supportive. So, I decided to go for my Ph.D. at Arizona, rather than back home in Germany.

I look back at my time at Arizona with a lot of fond memories. It was a very rewarding time, both personally and professionally. The department provided an environment where I could flourish. The atmosphere was informal, friendly, and supportive, yet I was challenged to develop my skills as a researcher right from the very beginning. The faculty were excellent scholars, yet they were also approachable. Collaborating with different faculty and other Ph.D. students was not only accepted, but encouraged. I feel that my experience at Arizona has equipped me very well with the skills required to take the next step and become a productive assistant professor at a research university. I also continue to treasure the relationships and ongoing collaborations with faculty in the department.
