Doctoral Program Coursework

The student's faculty advisor will help develop a program that will typically involves two types of activities:

  • Advanced level seminars and course work through the Department of Management and Organizations and other UA departments
  • Independent study and supervised research with individual faculty members
      

Courses for the First Two Years

The following courses are required for all Management & Organizations students:

  • Two courses in statistics: Univariate and Multivariate Analyses (MAP582a and b)
  • Two courses in research methodology: MAP600 is focused on experiments and MAP554 is focused on surveys and field studies
  • Two courses covering Organizational Behavior (MAP580A) and Organizational Theory (MAP580b)
  • Seminar in Judgment and Decision Making (MAP696D)
  • Seminar in Human Resource Management (MAP696F)
  • Three courses in any of the following seminars (but more may be taken on an elective basis):
    • Management & Organizations 545: Interactive Behavior In Small Groups
    • Management & Organizations 558: Conflict and Cooperation in the Dyad
    • Management & Organizations 696: Ph.D. Seminars offered at least once every 3 years in specific areas of organizational behavior such as Gender Issues, Organizational Justice, Negotiation and Conflict Management, Social Network Analysis, Teams
  • Minor courses in outside departments

Courses for the Third Year

The following courses are required for all Management & Organizations students:

  • Additional Course in Methodology outside Management & Organizations
  • Additional Seminar (MAP696)
  • The remaining courses outside of Management & Organizations required to complete the minor

Note: Courses must be chosen in consultation with and be approved by the Graduate Advisor. With approval, Ph.D. students may substitute previously taken courses.

1st Year

1st Semester

  • Management & Organizations 580A Theory of Management and Organization (required)
  • Management & Organizations 582A Multivariate Analysis in Management: Linear Statistical Models (or appropriate alternative, required)
  • Management & Organizations 600 Behavioral Science Theory and Method (required)

2nd Semester

  • Management & Organizations 696D Judgment and Decision Making (required)
  • Management & Organizations 582B Multivariate Analysis in Management: Applied Multivariate Statistical Analyses (or appropriate alternative, required)
  • Management & Organizations 696 Management & Organizations Department Seminar (required)
      
  • Select faculty research advisor for summer project, plan project, and gather initial data set

Summer

  • Finish majority of summer project (data collection, analyses, and first draft of paper)
  • Work on research projects
  • Possibly teach 1-2 summer courses for experience and additional pay (the decision about who teaches summer courses depends on student interest and course availability)
      
2nd Year

1st Semester

  • Management & Organizations 580B Theory of Management and Organization (required)
  • Management & Organizations 554 Research Methodology (required)
  • Outside Minor Course (required for minor)
      
  • Turn in approved final draft of summer research project and present project in Management & Organizations department colloquium

2nd Semester

  • Management & Organizations 696F Human Resource Management (required)
  • Management & Organizations 696 Management & Organizations Department Ph.D. Seminar (required)
  • Outside Minor Course (required for minor)

Summer

  • Continue working on research projects
  • Possibly teach 1-2 summer courses
3rd Year

1st Semester

  • Management & Organizations 696 Management & Organizations Department Ph.D. Seminar (required)
  • Additional Methods Course outside Management & Organizations* (required, or take in Spring)
  • Outside Minor Course (required for minor)

2nd Semester

  1. Management & Organizations 696 Management & Organizations Department Ph.D. Seminar (elective)
  2. Outside Minor Course (required for minor)

Summer

  • Pass major written exams; oral exams to be taken within 6 months following written exams
  • Continue working on research projects with a focus on dissertation-related research; plan dissertation proposal defense
  • Possibly teach 1-2 summer courses
      
4th Year

Note: Some students elect to reduce their program to a total of 4 year. In this case, they would progress directly to the "5th Year" plan shown below.

Fall and Spring Semesters

  • Continue working on research projects, focusing on the dissertation
  • Possibly take a Management & Organizations Department Ph.D. Seminar

Summer

  1. Continue working on research projects, focusing on the dissertation
  2. Possibly teach 1-2 summer courses
      
5th Year

1st Semester

  • 9 units Dissertation credit
  • Should have made significant progress on dissertation in terms of theory, data collection, and analyses
      
  • Job application process begins

2nd Semester

  • 9 units Dissertation credit
  • Working on final draft of dissertation to be completed by the end of the semester or early summer at the latest
      
  • Job interviewing and selection
      
  • Defend thesis

* Note: The additional methods course would be chosen in consultation with the Ph.D. program advisor. The methods course requirements are flexible. Students may substitute previously taken methods courses.
